Custom Ornamental Iron Works

Richmond's Manfred Henschler was recently honoured with a B.C. New-Canadian Entrepreneur Award, which recognizes the achievements of successful new Canadians. Henschler, who was born in Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1967, won in the manufacturing category. The third-generation blacksmith learned his trade from his father in Germany and by attending trade school. After a brief time on the East Coast, he settled in Richmond.

In 1973, Henschler started to notice a growing trend in local architecture - wrought-iron railings and ornamental pieces were becoming more in demand. Based on that intuition, he started Custom Ornamental Iron Works in 1974 with only some basic tools and self determination. Today, the company has grown to 15 employees and stocks a product line of more than 1,700 different parts.

As the interests grew in wrought iron, Custom Ornamental has opened their doors to local high school students, providing them with the opportunity to try welding and learn more about the art of steel bending. The Ethno Businesses Council of B.C. annually presents awards to outstanding new-Canadian entrepreneurs.
